Dental Services

Good dental care is as important for your pet as it is for you.  Proper dental care not only prevents bad breath and periodontal diseases, but also prevents infection speading through the blood stream to your pets' vital organs (liver, kidneys, and heart).  Our dental services include:

  • Prophylactic Untrasonic Cleaning
  • Polishing
  • Extractions
  • Periodontal Surgery
  • Pain Control

Dental Health is critical to more than your pet's mouth! It affects your cat or dog's entire body. Not only can poor dental health affect eating habits and cause bad breath, but can also cause organ system failure and general illness in your pet.

An ultra-sonic scaler and other dental instruments are used to remove tartar and calculus from your pet’s teeth. Any loose or diseased teeth are examined and extracted if necessary. The cleaning is then followed by polishing of the teeth, just like when you go to the dentist. The dog is completely and safely anesthetized under Isoflurane inhalant anesthesia throughout the entire procedure.

Pre-Surgical Preparation:

1. Your pet must be up to date on his/her vaccinations.

2. Do not feed your pet after 10pm the night before surgery.

3. If you notice any abnormal swelling or discharge from the mouth or any other questions or problems with your pet's health please call us right away.

Following your pet’s dental cleaning there are also other “at home” steps you can take to discourage the buildup of tartar and calculus on the teeth as well as lengthen the time between dental cleanings. The different things you can do at home consist of special tartar reducing diets such as Hill’s T/D, a special enzyme toothpaste with a toothbrush which is used multiple times a week, or a special enzyme gel which is rubbed on the gums and teeth multiple times a week if brushing is not tolerated. All of these help to keep your pet’s mouth clean and healthy.

We now carry OraVet which is a dental sealant for your pet's teeth. It is applied at the veterinary office after the teeth are professionally cleaned. You are then sent home with weekly applications of OraVet to maintain the sealants. OraVet provides a barrier on the teeth that helps to inhibit bacteria from sticking to the teeth. The benefit of using this product is to lengthen the time between dental cleanings. You can read about it yourself at www.oravet.com.
